In early 2010 the idea of ModelRailroadBenchwork.com was born. I realized that there was no company which could provide all of the benchwork componets you might need in one place. So I set off to create a business that was just that; a one stop shop.
How My Benchwork is Different
The first ingredient in the modelrailroadbenchwork.com recipe is quality “cabinet grade” plywood. Plywood is much more dimensionally stable than regular lumber. The second ingredient is pocket hole screws for assembly. Pocket hole screws do two things, they make joints stronger by putting the screw thread into the side grain of the plywood instead of the end grain and they open a new world of flexibility to model railroad benchwork by allowing a user to move individual boards within the benchwork even after track has been laid without the need for a saw or hours of disassembly.
The only system featuring:
- Cabinet grade plywood
- pocket screw construction
- useable in any direction or configuration
- Free size modifications to suit your needs
My Model Railroading Background
Having grown up next to the Chicago northwestern mainline, it was only natural that I become a model railroader. Over the years, I have experienced modeling in many scales Including: HO, N, O, and even LEGO. I even co-founded a train club back in 2001. It was during that time that I built my first piece of real benchwork. Over the next few years, I became a finish carpenter and home remodeler. In early 2010 I finally realized that I could combine two things I really enjoy, help the model railroading community grow, and start my own business.
My Day Job
My day job is high end finish carpentry and cabinet installation as well as home remodeling which makes me a bit of a general handyman. It is through this experience that I acquired the woodworking knowledge and techniques which allow me to offer a wide variety of high quality, affordable products to you.
To provide cabinet quality benchwork to model railroaders that is user friendly, easy to assemble, built of environmentally friendly quality materials, at a price every hobbyist can afford.
